Lorraine and Mike Ashby have held an Elders Real Estate franchise for more than five years although have been associated with this iconic group for some years before that. Recently we have renamed ourselves as Elders Real Estate, Southern Gateway to reflect the expanded area that we cover. To cope with this expansion we are opening a branch office in Cockburn Central – we have chosen this spot because of our growing presence in the whole area having sold property in all the suburbs there. Their first office is well established in Kwinana Town Centre the rapidly growing community initially established as a town some 60 years ago to house the workers from the growing industrial area on the coast and so beautifully planned by Margaret Feilman at that time. The population has grown rapidly in the past few years and is now just a few residents short for the 30,000 mark which will allow the “Town” to become a “City”.
Kwinana is a leafy urban/country environment with a strong sense of community just 25 minutes from Perth CBD and 10 minutes from the ocean at Cockburn Sound. Named after the ship “Kwinana” which ran aground in the Cockburn Sound in 1922 – the name of the ship was taken from a cattle district in the Kimberley and is a local aboriginal word for “Pretty Maiden” The town boasts great sporting facilities, recreation and aquatic centre and is currently undergoing a transformation to provide more services to the area. The Kwinana Arts Centre is a hive of activity staging local productions and musicals and also has an open air Cinema.
New estates are being grown through the whole region in Coogee, Munster, Yangebup, Beeliar, Cockburn Central, Success, Aubin Grove, Hammond Park, Honeywood, Wandi, Anketell, Casuarina, Bertram, Leda, Wellard and Baldivis. Eventually in Mandogalup.
The very efficient rail link to Perth and Mandurah services the region well with more stations planned as population growth demands them.
Cockburn began life in 1827 being named for Admiral George Cockburn a renowned naval officer. More recently it has been noted for its shipbuilding industry and the new marina, Port Coogee, will bring even greater prosperity to the community. In the meantime the forward looking city council has encouraged growth as all the building around the Cockburn Central railway station will attest including the Gateway Shopping Centre and the growing number restaurants – we just await the cinema complex and sports stadium to fulfill its potential.
The coastal part of Cockburn is Coogee, a beachside suburb just 15 minutes from Fremantle with beautiful homes, beautiful coastline, ocean views and a planned marina and boat harbour at Port Coogee. The planned Port Coogee will provide walkways, cycleways, cafes, restaurants, shops, parkland, boardwalks, mooring facilities and waterside residences. This will be enhanced with the building of a luxury hotel and the mooring of Cockburn’s own tall ship.
