MACLEANVistors to Maclean often remark on the unique ambience of the town. An appealing sense of history evokes memories of days gone by. Its Scottish heritage is very evident at the Stone Cottage & Bicentennial Museum, which leads to the town's spectacular lookout and balancing Pinnacle Rocks. The streetscape in River Street is one of the towns finest, with beautifully restored hertiage buildings and the Centenary of Federation mural.
Maclean is the base for a fishing fleet and local fresh prawns and seafood are available at the Maclean Fish-coop and many of the seafood takeaway stores. There are many excellent spots to catch a fish along the mighty Clarence River, which can be explored by houseboat, cruiser or yacht.
Maclean also is the southern gateway to the Australian sugar industry, and the fields of swaying cane contribute to the restful atmosphere of the area. Australia's oldest working sugar mill is at Harwood beside the only sugar refinery in New South Wales.
Surfing at the magnificent beaches of Yamba and world rated Angourie is only a 15 minute drive away, and glorious national parks, alive with koalas, kangaroos and emus, make great day trips for locals or vistors alike.
The climate is mild, and has been the deciding factor for many to transfer their lives to this community from the hotter North or the colder South.
