Orbost is situated in the far east of Victoria between Nowa Nowa and Cabbage Tree Creek.
Orbost is positioned on the Snowy River, surrounded by its rich river flats. Its commercial centre is along Nicholson Street and includes two supermarkets, a selection of shops and two hotels. At the northern end of the commercial centre, at the Salisbury Street roundabout is the memorial clock tower and cenotaph.
Forest Park is an attractive reserve in Orbost, between Nicholson Street and the Snowy River. It features a slab hut which was built in 1872 and relocated to its present site. The hut is open to the public and furnished as a period settler's home. Other attractions in Forest Park include the Orbost Exhibition Centre and gallery, as well as a number of rainforest walks which begin in the park.
Good views of Orbost, the Snowy River and the bridges across its flood plain can be enjoyed from Grandview Lookout, located south-west of Orbost in the small community of Newmerella. 14 kilometres downstream along the Snowy River near its mouth is the small coastal community of Marlo. The scenic route from Marlo to Cabbage Tree takes you along the coastline where you can view the pristine beaches heading towards Cape Conron.
Heading north along the Princes Highway you will drive through Cabbage Tree, Manorina and Cann River. Turning right at Manorina and travelling 23 kms towards the coast you will arrive in the popular fishing hamlet of Bemm River which is surrounded by National Park – an increasingly popular holiday destination.
Cann River is well known for being a timber town with mills still operative today. The Princes Highway and Monaro Highway meet in Cann River which gives you option to travel further along the coast to Mallacoota and the NSW border on the Princes Highway, or Bombala, Cooma and the NSW border on the Monaro Highway. Tamboon Inlet and Point Hicks is accessible by turning right at the highway junction and travelling towards the coast.
The Point Hicks Lighthouse is open for visitors and there is also accommodation available.
