business services, pastoral, horticulture,
mining, construction, retail, and community and
government services. Agricultural industries
mainly comprise cattle breeding and
horticulture (vegetables and grapes). Tourism,
particularly cultural indigenous-based tourism,
is a key driver of the economy. The Northern
Territory relies heavily on international exports,
especially for its cattle trade and resources
(minerals and petroleum).
The region's agricultural production was
estimated at $65m (2004-5), representing 16%
of the Northern Territory's total agricultural
production. Pastoral production contributed
$56m, and horticulture $9m. Alice Springs and
the Central Australian region contributed 17%
towards the Northern Territory's Gross State
Product in 2008. The Northern Territory's growth
averaged 3.8% over the five years to 2008,
while expected growth for this year is 6.6%.
Economic stability is also reflected through the
1800 businesses operating in the town, which
has a stable, young population, low
unemployment, and high workforce
participation.
Herbie (Peter) Neville, Elders' Rural Sales
Consultant, first moved to The Alice in 1976 and
returned to live there permanently in 1994. With
extensive expertise in the sale of pastoral
properties and fruit farms, Herbie is well known
in the community and highly regarded for his
knowledge of the pastoral industry in the Red
Centre. Currently available are several beef
cattle breeding and fattening properties ranging
from approximately 2,000 square kilometres to
5,000-plus square kilometres. "A major
drawcard of the area," says Herbie, "is the sheer
size of available land, which allows for large
numbers of breeding cattle. It's also relatively
low maintenance country, making properties
economical to run." Given the central region is
equidistant to the two main markets, breeders
can take advantage of the best markets at any
given time, whether live export out of Darwin in
the north, or feedlotters and meat processors in
the south. Trade too in Western Australia in not
uncommon. "The region," says Herbie, "offers
expansive, affordable cattle country set amidst
one of the most extraordinary and beautiful
landscapes in the world."
