The original craftsmanship was constructed by convicts under supervision by royal engineer, Lieutenant Edmund Du Crane in 1852. Sir Hector Cornthwaite Rason later lived in the house. He was MP for a number of years, Minister for Justice and the seventh Premier for Western Australia. His son Ernest Hector was a returned Guildford Anzac.
Lt. Du Cane wrote to his mother in April 1852 "I am building myself a house consisting of two rooms, a big office, a kitchen and servant room, stable and garden. It faces from the road, looking up the Helena Valley to a distant glimpse of the Darling Hills".
